When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread. “Be careful,” Jesus said to them. “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” They discussed this among themselves and said, “It is because we didn’t bring any bread.” Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, “You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread? Do you still not understand? Don’t you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered? Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered? How is it you don’t understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. Matthew 16:6-12 NIV
How do we apply this passage to our lives today? The world is full of “Pharisees and Sadducees” who proclaim false teachings. Following their teachings shall only lead to destruction. There also are those who proclaim to teach the Gospel, yet their focus in not truly on that which is from the Lord. These seek recognition from man and not to please God.
The words of Jesus do not tell us to condemn such as these, nor to judge them. What we are to do is be on guard against their teachings.
We must take time to read God’s word daily, and focus on its true meaning. Misunderstanding what Christ says is easy if we don’t apply a Godly wisdom. Ask Him for that wisdom, that you might better understand His word, that you can share it with others.
What we need to do is focus on sharing the truth about Jesus Christ. If we read God’s word, pray earnestly, and obey the Lord, the Holy Spirit will guide us in sharing the truth. This is what the world needs to hear, not the lies that come from those of this world. The potential rewards which they can provide have no eternal benefit. Share the truth of Christ with others.
