In His Hometown

When Jesus had finished these parables, he moved on from there. Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they were amazed. “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?” they asked. “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary, and aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? Aren’t all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?” And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town and in his own home.” And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith. Matthew 13:53-58 NIV

The people of His hometown were taught by Christ in their synagogues. They could see the wisdom He possessed, and they did see some wonders that He performed. Yet, instead of choosing to believe in Him, they focused on His humanity and not His deity. They tried to put limitations on Him and what He did. Jesus therefore, did not do many miracles in their presence, due to their lack of belief.

Before we shake our head, or point our finger at these people, we must truly ask ourselves, do we place limitations on the Lord? Do we doubt His ability, or willingness to do for us? I would venture to say that most of us have done this at some point. We may even still continue to do this in our actions. It seems hard for us to truly let go and totally give up our will for the will of God, to live freely in His will, know that He will more than adequately take care of us.

We are the ones who put limitations on what God can do for us. God does not have limitations on that which He can do. Take that step. Let go. Fall into the arms of the Lord. He will catch you, and provide abundantly for you.
