They Wanted A Sign

Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.” He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” Matthew 12:38-40 NIV

Why did the Pharisees and teachers of the law want to see a sign from Jesus? He had performed some miracles in their presence, yet they chose not to believe. Their hearts were hardened to the truth of God.

Jesus knew their hearts and minds, thus, calling them an evil and adulterous generation. The sign that Jesus said would be performed was not even understood by those present. No one else could do what Jesus would. No one that the Pharisees or teachers of the law knew could raise someone from the dead. Even after Jesus did rise from the dead, these people did not believe.

Thankfully, our hearts have been opened to the truth of Jesus Christ. We know of His death and resurrection. We shall see Him again one day.
