What Do We Think About Miracles?

Then Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent. “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you. And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades. For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.” Matthew 11:20-24 NIV

What lesson can we take away from this message of Christ? We know that God works miracles. Do we take many of those miracles for granted, i.e. the sun rising in the morning, etc.? Seeing God perform miracles, do we expect from Him, even to the point of thinking we deserve His miracles. God’s miracles are done out of His grace and mercy toward us, not because we deserve them. Those with expectations of Godly miracles might even get demanding, feeling that if God does not perform, then He does not love us. This is so wrong. God owes us nothing. Yet, He loves us with a love beyond our comprehension, and thus does perform miracles, either collectively for mankind, or individually for us. What we must do is understand that this is done out of love and mercy for us. We deserve nothing. Yet, we are given abundantly. Depend on God, not demanding, but graciously accepting that which is given to you. God knows what is best for you and will provide accordingly.
