For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. - 2 Timothy 1:7

I watch a lot of HGTV.  Mostly as background noise for my writing, painting or business activities.  However the commercial for Hometown Fixer-Upper caught my attention.  Erin Napier, one of the people on the show, uses the catch phrase: Get up and do it.

How much time have we wasted in our lives?  Distracted from all the things we have on that to-list  we made at the beginning of the year?  What has captured our attention instead?

Perhaps we spend our nights watching movies while eating ice cream and popcorn?  Maybe we are addicted to every spy novel we can get our hands on.  Perhaps we have houses to clean, jobs to go to, meals to cook and kids to feed?

What is it that is preventing us from starting that new business?  Painting that masterpiece?  Writing that next big novel?  Trying out for that movie?

It is not because we have shiny object syndrome or are lazy that we don't accomplish our dreams.  It is because we are afraid.  Afraid to commit all that time, money and effort to a project that may not work out.  We are afraid to fail

Failure can be looked at two ways.  As the end or the beginning.  We can see failure as final, or we can see failure as a learning experience,  an opportunity to figure out what we did wrong and do things differently the next time.

We are going to fail.    It is an inevitable part of life.   We are going to be bad the first few times we try something new.

Failure is not being bad at the activity the first time you try it.  Failure is not trying things in the first place because we are afraid to fail.

World famous violinists, gymnasts,  basketball players may have been born with some initial talent,  but it is the practice day in and day out that caused them to succeed.  The getting up and doing it everyday when they would rather be watching Game of Thrones or seeing a movie with friends.

If we want to meet our goals,  we have to see failure as just an opportunity to learn how to do things better next time.   We have to focus and practice until we have mastered it.

Don't let the fear of failure stop you from trying something new.

Take out that list of goals.  Pick one and focus on it.  Schedule fifteen minutes every day to work on it.   Say no to distractions, and get up and do it.  Do this everyday and you will see yourself accomplish that goal.
