John's Disciples Sent to Christ

When John, who was in prison, heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples to ask him, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?” Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.” Matthew 11:2-6 NIV

Why did John need to send his disciples to Jesus? John had been in prison, and most likely knew his days were numbered. He wanted some affirmation that his work had been completed, and that Jesus truly was the Messiah. Jesus did not scold the disciples of John, but just told them to relay to John what Christ had been doing. John could thus rest assured that the Messiah had come.

We see a blessing herein as well. Anyone who does not stumble on account of Christ is blessed. We must continue in obedience to Christ, and to His word. Our eternal destiny has been secured by the sacrifice of Christ’s blood on the cross. We must remain firmly attached to Him, always following in His steps. The road is narrow, but, the reward at the end of the long journey is priceless. And, during the journey the kingdom of God is at hand.
