“All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.” Matthew 5:37 NIV
Just prior to saying this, Christ had spoken of avoiding the making of an oath.
If one’s “Yes” or “No” cannot be accepted on its own, either the one to whom the word is spoken does not have trust, or the one who speaks the word is not trustworthy. When this occurs, it is hard to reach an agreement on the matter.
Adding an oath does nothing. If the person who says Yes or No is a truthful individual, they will follow through on what they say, while if they are not truthful, they will not do as they say. An oath buys the other person nothing. All oaths do is lead to problems. No oath should be made using God’s name. If the one wants some additional assurance, find a manner other than an oath.
Say what you mean, and mean what you say. Abide by what you say. To those you encounter, this should be enough.
