The Passive Approach

Sometimes you don’t have to go out of your way to evangelism. Sometimes the best thing you can do is to be yourself but be open to whatever comes your way. 

As an introvert, you probably would rather stay in your own inner world most of the time. Here’s a challenge that I have accepted. If someone initiates a conversation with you then do your best to continue the conversation. Put down the phone or the book and be fully present. Listen and follow the topic. The natural instinct is to endure the conversation with a stranger and then get it over with as soon as possible. Let's be honest introverts - that's what we want to do. But God may have set the situation up so be curious about what He could be up to. 

I used to wear fun and funky looking hats and this led the Goth people to just walk  right up to me and start talking. They would have never approached me if I was wearing classic or trendy assessories. I thought that was weird but it dawned on me that I was willing to stand out in a world where everyone looks the same and that caused them to identify with me. You could say that God used it as bait. 

Many times I would sit in a coffee shop or restaurant and be reading and the chances were strong that someone would ask me what book I was reading. This happened more often when I had more money to do that kind of thing. Sometimes I was reading the Bible and other times it was a Christian book. How easy is that? I suppose it helps to be excited about what you are reading.  

In the places that I go to regularly, I make a point of talking to the cashier there such as at the gas station or the grocery store. I start off with that dreadful small talk but in time the topics turn deeper. In fact it is usually the extroverted cashier that initiates the chit chat. So, simply go with the flow. 

As my evangelistic friends would say: Always be looking for the opening.
