For the rest of the week, Gui and people from Daphne's news network decided that the news reporters and the party would be at Beijing Kung Fu Academy three weeks from the day that Daphne first announced the idea of the news station coming to film the academy. Gui and the rest of the staff spent that time working overtime to make sure the academy looked the best that it possibly could so that it would make a good impression on television. Kennedie quickly got to work ordering all of the supplies that she would need to make the arts, crafts, and jewelry to sell at the party. She planned to decorate plain candles to make them glittery so that moms and dads would want to use them in their homes, bead necklaces, and papier-mache figures of kung fu students practicing their routines. She hoped and prayed that everything would arrive soon so that everything would be ready in time for the party. The candles and the materials to make them glittery and the beads and string for the necklace arrived within a couple of days, but the papier-mache materials did not. Kennedie decided not to freak out. If they came, they came, and if they didn't, they didn't. The parents and students would enjoy the party and the arts and crafts she had the materials for. God would still bless the day.
Meanwhile, over in Beijing, Ping Cheng had been working late at the office he worked in at his dad's computer/electronics business. He was the family's favorite, because he had not strayed from the religion of Chinese Buddhism, and he had decided to take over the family business and stay in China and not marry a woman who wasn't Chinese. Li and Kim Cheng always called Ping their "only son," because they claimed that Gui had turned his back on them and shamed his family and was no longer their son. Ping had bought fast food during his break and was eating orange chicken and brown rice with chopsticks while he worked. As he worked and ate, he thought of his brother, as he often did. Li and Kim could say that they only had one son all they wanted and pretend like Gui wasn't their son, but the truth was, Ping knew that nothing would ever change the fact that he had a brother and that his heart ached to get in touch with him again. His parents had firmly objected to the idea and threatened to disown him if he ever talked to Gui, so Ping decided that, while they weren't around, he would slip his brother an e-mail and see how he was doing. He remembered his brother lived in Malibu and that he was an instructor in a kung fu academy, so he looked him up online and found a link to a web site for a kung fu academy in Malibu, California called Beijing Kung Fu Academy. The search said that the main instructor and owner of the academy was Gui Cheng, so Ping went onto the web site, found his brother's work e-mail address, and sent him the following message:
Hello, Gui, this is your brother, Ping. Please e-mail me and tell me how you are. I miss you and want to see you again soon. I love you.
Over in Malibu, Gui had gotten to come home early from work, so he decided to get onto the academy web site and post the announcement of the sports news network's visit. After he was done posting, he realized how tired he was from working late and all of the preparations that had to be done, so he decided to take a nap on the couch. He was asleep the same moment that Ping sent his e-mail.
Moments later, Kennedie, who had been watering the flowers in the yard, came in to check her e-mails. She was okay if the papier-mache materials didn't arrive, but she was just curious to see if she'd gotten an e-mail confirmation saying they were coming soon. When she spotted her husband snoring softly on the couch, she tiptoed quietly past him and over to their computer. When she saw that her husband's work screen was on the computer, she noticed a little flashing envelope. That meant he got new e-mail. She clicked on the button to see if someone was saying they intended to be at the big upcoming event, which she noticed he had announcned on the web page. When she saw the e-mail, her eyes widened. It was from her brother-in-law! The subject heading read:
For My Dearly Loved Brother
Kennedie was so happy that she let out an excited scream. Her scream woke Gui up. "Wh--what is it?" he asked groggily.
Kennedie bounded over to the couch and took him by the hand. "You're not going to believe this!" she exclaimed. She led him over to the computer, and when Gui saw the e-mail, he immediately started crying tears of joy and hugged Kennedie close. "I always prayed this would happen," he said. "He wants to see me!"
"Let's invite him to the event at your academy," said Kennedie.
Gui agreed that was a great idea, and they immediately sent out an e-mail. A few hours later, they were even happier when Ping replied that he would be there.
