Two weeks later at the academy, Gui had just finished up another day when eight-year-old Andrew Sterling approached him. "Thanks for another great lesson today, Mr. Cheng," he said.
"You're welcome, Andrew," Gui said as he grabbed his bag.
"You've been teaching us some good routines, sir," Andrew said. "Tomorrow I'm gonna use your routines to kill those big bullies who are always stealing my lunch money!"
"Whoa, hold it there, son," Gui said as he got down to his level, "martial arts is never about killing
. It's about defending
and building respect for yourself and your life. When you forget what it's really about, you might use it the wrong way."
"Yes, sir," Andrew said. "I'm sorry."
"It's all right, sport," Gui said as he tousled Andrew's hair a little. "You go on and get your backpack. See you tomorrow."
"Have a great day, Mr. Cheng!" Andrew called as he went to get his backpack.
"You, too, Andrew," Gui said.
Daphne, Andrew's mother, approached Gui. "Hi, Mr. Cheng," she said.
"Hello, Ms. Sterling," Gui said. "How are you?"
"I'm all right, thank you. You?"
"I'm all right, thanks."
"Thank you for what you just told my son about what martial arts is really all about," Daphne said.
"No problem," Gui said.
"You know I'm a news reporter for a sports news network, right?" Daphne asked.
"I just love your business. It teaches not only self-defense but character. I know you are very successful, but would you mind if my news network came one day and recorded and reported on your academy to promote it?"
Thrill shot through every part of Gui's body. "That'd be great!" Daphne looked around the room. "Now, don't get me wrong, it looks nice, but I think the kids should have a party to celebrate that their academy is being advertised on the news, don't you?"
"Absolutely. Couldn't agree with you more," Gui agreed. "At the party, can we have a booth for the parents and students to buy arts and crafts and jewelry? My beautiful wife is great with arts and crafts and sells them at street fairs all the time."
A funny expression came to Daphne's face when she heard the words "beautiful wife," but then she removed the expression from her face immediately and said, "Sure she can."
That night when Gui got home, he gave Kennedie the news. Kennedie threw her arms around her husband's neck and kissed him over and over. "Sweetie, that's wonderful! I am so happy for you!" she cried.
"Andrew's mom wanted to know if we could have a party at the school, and I suggested a booth for the parents and students to buy arts, crafts, and jewelry." Gui held Kennedie a little more tightly and asked playfully, "I don't suppose you know of anyone who's good with making arts and crafts, do you?"
"Well," Kennedie said as she hugged Gui a little more tightly around his neck, "I know one woman who's really good at it. She loves you more than anything, and she loves waking up next to you every day and being in your arms and feeling your tender kisses." She and Gui kissed each other on the lips.
Gui smiled and whispered, "That's great, because I recommended this woman."
Kennedie smiled and exclaimed, "I would be delighted!" She and Gui shared another kiss.
