Pain will tell you that you’re worthless. Pain will tell you that you’ll never amount to anything. Pain might even tell you that you should just kill yourself because you have no purpose in this world. The author of pain is the devil (I use a lowercase “d” because the level of authority he has doesn’t deserve a capital letter), and he will do anything he can to try to use pain to teach us how valuable we are.
No matter what we do in life, there will always be pain. We can’t avoid it, hide from it, or pretend it doesn’t exist, but we can learn from it and use it to take us to our purpose. Romans 12:2 doesn’t say, Be transformed by your bad experiences. What it says is, Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will (NIV).
When we become transformed by our bad experiences, we’re unknowingly conforming to the patterns of this world. If a child touches a hot stove, they learn to never do that again, but if an adult has a bad experience with someone who treats them poorly, they “learn” to never talk to that person again.
While not touching a hot stove is a good lesson to learn, avoiding people who treat us poorly often leaves us isolated and alone since no one says all the right things all the time. Jesus was never motivated by pain, but He was motivated by His God ordained purpose. He knew He was called to save humanity by dying on a cross for our sins, and His disciples denying Him didn’t change His focus nor His calling.
When we know why we’re alive and what our divine assignment is on the earth, that’s when our why will start to drown out the voice of our pain. When Jesus told us to turn the other cheek, He didn’t say that because He wanted people to take advantage of us, but he said it because our love for people has to be greater than our desire to defend what we think we deserve. Pain can either take you to your grave or it can take you to your purpose, and where it takes you depends on what you choose to do with your pain.
When you live from a divine perspective, your pain will always take you to your purpose. When you view a setback as a divine setup for greater things to come, you will see those greater things. When you forgive people who offend you, especially when they don’t deserve it, you will gain favor with both God and man the way Jesus did. The devil designed pain to take us to our grave, but when we fix our eyes on Jesus, He can use it to take us a purpose we can’t even fathom.

I would like to recommend you take time to view it. Just another perspective on the same subject
You become mercenary.
Good point about staying away from people who can be a pain. Also good qualification that this doesn't mean you let people take advantage of you.
The Lord has taught me, through trials, to care more for people and put myself in their shoes. People wonder why I've stuck with a sick woman (cancer) who has issues, such as not knowing when to stop drinking, and becoming a pain when I tell her no more. She's come around, and now is in a nursing home. I don't have the heart to go my own way; God has given me the heart to stick with her.
