WHAT IF?
" I have loved you with an everlasting love"
Let's imagine, by some twisted piece of reasoning, that there was no God. That's pretty hard to imagine. If there was no God, there would be no world, no stars, no light, no air to breathe, no people, no anything. Why should there be anything but nothing if there is no God? But let's imagine things as they are right now, without Him.
Why should I feel anything toward you? Why should you feel anything toward me? All that we know about love we learned from the Lord, so with God out of the picture, we'll just rule out love. Sort of like how people lived when the Great Flood came and destroyed them all. Is that how you want to live? They had no use for God. All except Noah, that is. He loved God. Because God first loved him.
What about joy? Peace? Contentment? Fulfillment? Happiness? Closeness to family, or friends or brothers and sisters in Christ? Well, forget all that. Because we're imagining life without God.
You think that your life is difficult because you struggle against the flesh. Well, it is difficult. Anything that is of lasting, beautiful purpose is not going to come without a price; and a refining process. You may feel worthless. But God says that your worth rests in Christ Jesus. Your feelings are real. But your feelings aren't eternal. God is eternal.
But what if you just didn't care about your cursed flesh or the world or the devil because there was no God? Do you like the thought of that alternative? Sounds pretty sad, doesn't it? Empty? Pointless? God did not create us to have no purpose. Our purpose rests in Him. Be at peace in that.
When you were altogether in sin and unaccepting and unbelieving of what Christ did for you on Calvary, God was dead in your book. How would you like to go back to that? Doesn't sound good, does it? You were not created to turn your back on Him. You were created to honor Him and to worship Him and to love Him and to enjoy Him with every fiber of your being.
If you've never been born again, please take care of that, right now. The angels in heaven will rejoice as you are washed in the shed Blood of our Lord, Jesus Christ. And Christian, you who are numbered among the elect, don't forget for a moment the magnitude of what God in human flesh did for you on that day that you accepted His free gift of salvation. Reflect back on what your life was like before you knew him.
Life can be extremely difficult. Temptations can be mind-boggling. But all things truly do work together for good to those who are His called. His ways are above our ways. His thoughts are above our thoughts. We do not see the beginning unto the end the way that He sees. He is working out a great work in us. You are an heir to eternity. If you could only see yourself in glory for a moment you would realize that He is making you into something amazing. He is making you into the image of His Only Begotten Son. We are His. Forever. The world is passing. We are not. We are His.
Is it any wonder that Peter clung to Jesus when he said, "But Lord, to whom shall we go?" God not only made you and understands you and cares about your welfare but He is so concerned about your eternal well being that He gently disciplines you to make you more like His Son, Jesus. That training will see you through the good times and the bad. Through the valleys and the mountaintops and the dry, weary deserts. If you think He's not concerned about you, then you are simply wrong.
He is as close as your prayer closet. He is as kind as a loving Savior dying on a miserable, terrible cross so that you could spend eternity in Paradise with God. The liar will tell you that you're not worthy, that you've blown it once too often, that you'll never change. But remember that Jesus defeated the liar. The blood soaked ground of Golgotha is a testimony to Who it is that is Truth and who it is that is a defeated liar. Jesus has no desire to pound you on the head with a hammer of guilt or shame. He bore all your guilt and shame 2,000 years ago. It is finished. Glory to His Holy Name.
Stop listening to lies. You are His. Your spirit longs to fellowship with God's Spirit. Let your spirit go free. You will find yourself enveloped in a compassion like none you have ever known. Repent of your sins against God. Let go of anything, of everything that would hinder your complete and total surrender to He who loves you more than we can ever express in mere words. He is the author and finisher of your faith. He will see you through until the end. Repent, I say of any and all hindrances and bondages between you and your King. Forgiveness is as close as your confession. True repentance doesn't mean that you'll never mess up again. But it does mean that you take no pleasure in wickedness. If you fall, get up. Satan wants you to stay down. Jesus is calling you to get up. You're in a battle, Christian friend. Did you really expect anything less? Until the day you die, you are in a battle. But oh, what a battle! And the outcome is the salvation of your soul.
Dear God in heaven, give my brothers and sisters a glimpse of what awaits them on the other side of this earth. Be encouraged. The fight is for a while. But the fullness of abiding in His presence will be ours, forever and ever.
