Through a long, long day of labor,
And a night of toil and tears,
With a heart oft nigh to breaking,
Oft beset by doubts and fears;
'Tis the last chill hour 'ere morning,
And the breaking of the day,
When the night shall pass forever,
And the shadows flee away.

'Tis but the dark before the dawning
When the sunlight fills the sky;
When the clouds shall part asunder,
And we gather home on high.
Do not fear the lingering shadows,
For the night shall soon be gone;
Fix your eyes on the horizon:
Watch the breaking of the dawn.

Oh, how long the weary battle
Since the Savior went away,
Leaving yet this word of promise,
"I shall come again someday."
How our spirits burn within us
As the sky grows faintly light,
And we wait with eager yearning
For the passing of the night.

Even so, come soon, Lord Jesus!
Oh that this could be the day
When we gather home to glory
Where all tears are wiped away!
How our hearts beat high with longing
As by faith we watch and pray
For the coming of our Savior
At the coming of the day.
