In order to be my friend you have to be just a little off-kilter. You have to be just a little odd. Notice I said a little and not full-swing. You can have your chandelier-swinging moments and I’ll be right behind you - just so nobody gets hurt or has to go to the hospital as a result. You have to be able to believe that God is big. You can’t be too practical or logical. You have to get out of the way of faith. When you see faith moving swiftly down the street then roll out the red carpet and blow a horn. You have to want to live in full-color and not black and white. You’ve got to believe that warrior angels come flying 1,000 miles an hours when you plead the blood of Christ; If you don’t then you are living a lie. You have to believe that there’s a spiritual world with more good and some bad and you gotta want to be on the good side. And you have to pull out your sword every once in awhile and really shake things up against the dark side when its called for. You can’t be too stoic – feelings are important. You can’t say things like: I won’t follow or feel my feelings. Instead say, God purify and cleanse my feelings. I want to feel both good and bad – the full spectrum. I want to live and not be an addict who is numb. But you don’t have to swim in a shark tank or jump through an ice hole in mid-winter. Don’t be a nut. You have to think wisdom is cool. And you have to be kind to yourself when you mess up because you will but you get back up and try again. You will fail but not really because you will want to be under His shadow and you will have a heart that wants to do right even when you are not quite there. You gotta have fun with God. Go on some adventure. Don’t stay at home all the time like a cloistered nun. Be a radical nun if you are going to be a nun. Be a fun nun. Quit being such a crab. I’m serious. And when you take a trip with your relatives make an appointment for therapy afterward. You’ll need it and love them from a distance for awhile. Make sure you are sane again before you meet up again with them. Believe me, nobody knows why they act that way. Get yourself a door sign that says: Love God and love people. Some little child from kids ministry can make one for you to remind you what it’s all about. Failure is not what the enemy says it is in fact, if he says you are failing, you probably are succeeding. In fact, if he’s bugging you than you are bugging him. Keep bugging, just keep bugging him.
