When I Let Go, God Took Over

It was Tuesday, May 16^th at about 5 P.M. I entered the Critical Care Center of the local hospital. I could see that three members of the family of my best friend were speaking with one of the doctors. The discussion centered around the procedure for the final hours of my best friend’s life. The doctor told them that if they took her off the respirator, she would probably live for about 2 to 6 hours before succumbing. The next 48 hours were very critical. For her to have any chance, she would need to make a comeback within that time frame.

I did not want to interfere with the discussion, so I stepped out of the area and went to the waiting room. This situation was playing right into the hand of what a doctor had told me two days earlier. I had arrived at the hospital to find my friend hooked up to an oxygen mask. I asked the “on call” doctor what would need to occur for my friend to recover. Point blank the doctor told me that my friend would not get better, but would only get worse. All they could do was to try and keep her comfortable.

I felt very sad. I needed to do something. So, I started praising God, for who He is, and for all the glory and goodness from Him. I also prayed for a miracle, her recovery.

On that Tuesday night, as I sat by my friend’s bedside, I asked her if she would like me to read to her from the Bible. She said yes. For about 45 minutes I read verses to her from the gospels of Matthew and John. The readings all centered around words of our Savior. I shared with her about how much Jesus loves each of us so much, and how He is preparing a place for all of us who believe in Him.

As my friend started to doze off, I sat there wondering what was next. Then, I heard it. That soft, still, voice. “Let go.” In my heart I said, I must let go, for there is nothing that I can do to help her get better. Her destiny lay in the hands of God.

On arriving at the hospital the next day, I was told by a family member that she had made a slight improvement, but was still in critical condition. The following day, though, there was a significant improvement, and she was transferred out of the Critical Care section of the hospital.

Last night, June 3^rd, my friend was released from the hospital. Pneumonia had nearly claimed her life. Her lungs had lost more than 90% of their capacity for oxygen. There are still many medical issues my friend must face. The road ahead will be long and challenging.

In Matthew 6:27, Jesus asks us “Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” In verse 32 of this chapter we are told that the Father knows that which we need. And, in John 14:1 we read “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.”

I know some may think otherwise, but, I know God worked a miracle. No one can convince me otherwise.

I can personally tell you that when you let go, God can do works that no one else can do. His awesome power is released when we let go and turn it over to Him.
