That Tiny Mustard Seed

“If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you.” Luke 17:6 NIV

Wow! What awesome power there is in faith. So, why are we so hesitant to take Christ at His word when we need to deal with a situation which seems to have no good resolution? Do we not trust the magnitude of the power that can be released in true faith? If we are true followers of Christ, I do not believe this to be the case.

So, then, what holds us back from having faith the size of a mustard seed? I believe the following would more likely be the reason. Either we don’t believe there is valid merit to that for which we ask, or we somehow believe we do not deserve to have Christ intercede on our behalf to receive that which we ask for in prayer. Does what we ask for in our prayer bring glory and honor to God? If the answer is yes, then the valid merit issue is not the reason for not asking. As to whether or not we deserve Christ’s intervention, the answer is we don’t deserve it based on what we do. Any merit in the idea of deserving help is tied to our love and obedience to the Master, and our realizing that it is in His mercy that we receive.

How persistent are we in our requests in prayer? How fervently do we seek help from Christ? These are important parts of our faith. When we approach Christ with a humble and contrite heart, we must believe with all our being that He will do what is best for us. If we do this, then our prayer will be answered. It may not be answered in the manner we had asked, but, it will be done as is best for us. Believe this, for it is truly so!
