Is To Worry A Sin?

Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?” Luke 12:22-26 NIV

Christ tells us here to not worry. So, if we worry, have we sinned? Extremists may say so, but, I do not believe that to be the case. Christ does tell us though that worrying does not really provide any benefit to us. As he says, by worrying we cannot add even a single hour to our life. Worrying can be detrimental to our physical health. It can also get in the way of our relationship with the Master. If we do worry, we should take our worry to the Lord, asking us to totally trust in Him, and asking Him to remove this burden from us.

There certainly is so much in life which we could choose to worry about. But, worrying on its own provides no merit. It changes nothing. If worrying leads to constructive action, then at least something is accomplished. In John 14:1 Jesus lets us know not to let our heart be troubled. We are to believe in God and in Him. I can assure you that the most constructive action that anyone can take with worry is to take it to the Lord in prayer. Give all your cares to Him, for He cares for you.
