Knowing in Fullness

Because I can always be in the ongoing process of getting to know God better and better,  I can always be open to being surprised by God, ever open to discovering some new and surprising fact or facet of God’s personality.  And if that is true,  then I can remain open to being surprised by some new discovery about myself or about the others in my life who are made in God’s image , beginning with my own dearly beloved wife.  In fact the one is the measure of the other (1 John chapter4, v.20).  The more I know God, the more I will love God.  And the more I know and love God, the more I will be coming to know and love those around me who share in the likeness of God’s Son, never ceasing to be amazed by God, and by people, and by God in people.

In most cases,  as I get to know God better and better I will also be meeting and getting to know more and more people.  The one is usually a reflection of the other. (Still, it is true that it is better to know a few people well than to know scores of people only superficially.)  The infinite God can be known in a fullness but never exhaustively.  No created being can ever know all there is to know  of the infinite God.   And no single finite human being could ever know individually all the other human beings now alive on the face of the earth, not to mention all who ever lived, now live and ever will live on the earth, even though that be a finite number of human beings.  Something like this might be possible in heaven, though,  without the limitations of time and space we now experience.  With the creation of all who have ever lived, now live and ever will live, our great personal God is just beginning to express the vastness of who He is.
