It is safe to say that EVERYONE desires to be free. I have yet to meet anyone (in their right mind) who appreciates the burden of restriction, and the psychological damage brought about by extended periods of time spent bondage. Instead, history has proven time after time that when the freedom of a person or group of persons is threatened, it is considered a legitimate reason to fight, and even put one’s life on the line to preserve such freedom. For instance, when the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence in 1776, the 13 original colonies had been at war with Great Britain for a year already. But instead of giving up, they made a huge statement by drafting a document that emphasized their refusal to be void of freedom. They knew that this would mean continuing a war where casualties left homes without fathers, husbands, and sons. Yet the cause for freedom was too great to ignore. As a result of such resilience, we live in a free America today. Now in similar form, mankind was in bondage from what Adam did in the Garden of Eden. In order for freedom to prevail, it was necessary to fight. Fortunately for us, Jesus fought this battle for us, purchasing our freedom once and for all. His life was required for such a purchase, and He gladly gave it.
Why is it necessary to “fight” for freedom? Bondage manifests itself as an active enemy in many different ways, and has a specific purpose. When one kingdom fights another and takes prisoners, it does so with the intention of gain. This provides leverage for negotiation, or the presentation of demands; a power tactic.
Many people believe that freedom exists in their ability chose, and if they can do whatever they want, then they are exercising their freedom. Here is the fact of the matter: True freedom only exists in exercising one’s free will to obey the Word of God. Allow me to elaborate. Sin is disobedience to God’s Word. Did you know that sin has the desire to be a master over you, and steal your freedom? Romans 6:12 says “Do not let sin reign in your mortal body, so that you obey its lusts”. This proves that all sin has the desire to reign, and will do so if you give it the opportunity. In the same chapter, in vs. 14, it says “For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under the law, but under grace”. Chapter 6 ends by saying “The wages of sin is death”. So, let’s look at this: Yes, you possess the free will to do whatever you chose. But if your choice is sin, then you are a slave to it, and you serve it faithfully. However, your compensation is death. That deal stinks, if you ask me.
Jesus wants you to be FREE! Galatians 5:1 says, “It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm, and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery”. In other words, it is for “a continuous state of being free” (freedom) that Jesus paid such a dear price. So make the choice NOT to give in to sin, and the bondage it brings. You have to choose to live free. The only way to do that is to live according to knowledge of the truth, that sin is a tyrant who wants to keep you captive, but choosing to abandon sin gives you life. The price for our freedom was too great to exchange for moments of pleasure. We must choose life. We must choose freedom. LIVE FREE.
