Demons Know More than Many?

Then he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people. They were amazed at his teaching, because his words had authority. In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, “Go away! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!” “Be quiet!” Jesus said sternly. “Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him. All the people were amazed and said to each other, “What words these are! With authority and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!” And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area. Luke 4:31-37 NIV

We must remember that the author of this gospel, Luke, was a physician. So, maters of medical concern would have been his specialty. He tells us that the demon within the man was an impure spirit. Jesus told the impure spirit to come out of the man. It did so without even hurting him. I am sure the doctors of Jesus’ day had no cure for demon possessed people. We do not know what happened to this man once the impure spirit was cast out. Christ did present Him with the opportunity to have a pure heart, a heart which could be dedicated to the Lord.

The demons, the impure spirits, knew who Jesus Christ was, the Son of God. We read in the gospels of several incidents that unclean spirits would cry out that they knew who Jesus was, God’s only Son. Is it not ironic that the demons knew who Christ was, yet many people in Christ’s days, and today do not know who He is? They do not know Him because they have closed their hearts, minds, and souls to Him and His teachings. These are too concerned with their own well-being and earthly desires. Little do they know that they evidently are not concerned about their eternal destiny. The here and now is what matters to them. It is so ironic and sad that the demons know more than all these people. No wonder the Lord weeps over so many lost souls. These are souls that can be saved. The owners of these souls must come to the Lord and accept the free gift of salvation offered to them.
