FOR DAVID

In hours of the night that see
The trying of our mettle,
The Spirit spoke to void of heart
In the hills of Pennsylvania.

A stirring, restless, not right feeling
A vacancy of soul,
A calling to another purpose
But where, oh God? What for?

To seek the Lord on face and knees
This truly is the freeing
Of man from grip of earthly things
To the Oneness of His Being.

And so, the message spoken.
And so, the heart is broken.
To think of leaving all he's known
To venture toward a great unknown
Peace only in obedience comes
But what a perfect token.

As adrenaline pumps and a heart-fire rages,
Yet we feel so forlorn at the call to life's stages.
To the city, to its heart, the Spirit now is pointing;
Inadequacy creeps
But the servant has been steeped
Already in Power's Anointing.

So deep the sin and bondage there
That the gangs of youth must live in.
But He told us, He the Word of God
That it's love that can cover all sin.

The hardened hearts, they melted
At the touch of a man sent their way,
By the Master who gave them
A mercy-filled chance
On a hill called Golgotha one day.

"And now, oh servant
Blow the trumpet once more
For the day has arisen,
I neither slumber nor snore.
When smoke clears from Holy Ghost cleansing, pure fire
My Servant shall shine
And His brothers are Mine
And the evil shall burn
For an eternal turn
At its own devil-worshipping bier."
