Do Not Send Me a Friar

“I am guilty!†exclaimed the condemned soul,

For he desired truth over Sheol.

At that, the stern judge was quick to reply,

“How could you thoughtlessly kill her? And why?â€

As the man took the floor, the crowd stilled.

Slowly, the man cleared his throat and filled

The air with eager anticipation,

As he told his story of temptation.

On that fateful night in late September,

He crawled down the streets since dismembered

Creatures claimed his daily sympathy.

He stopped when nearing close proximity

To Farmer Lee's tantalizing gate.

Struggling to resist the cunning bait,

He stumbled upon his strong desires

And surrendered to the tempting briars.

Although their sweet perfume was entrancing,

In vain they competed in wind-dancing.

Toward all but one he was contented,

For from this flower he was tormented.

His heart was captured by this young flower,

But alas! She was wilting by the hour.

He refused to part from this frail lover,

Vowing he would never love another.

Swiftly, the equinox approached the bed

So he knew there was no time to be sped.

Promptly, he espied an abandoned blade,

Forgotten, yet appeared to be well-made.

Without a second thought, he slit her stem

Then creased her, to ever admire his gem.

With this, Farmer Lee cursed the convicted.

By this loss, he was deeply afflicted.

“Death by hanging!†cried the enraged jury,

“So our helpless flowers do not worry!â€

Hearing this, the guilty man began to roar,

“Have you not heard that all is fair in love and war?!

'Tis true I killed your precious briar,

Though no need of sending me a friar.

For I regret not, that what I have done,

Since eternal love is what I have won.â€
