Who Do You Seek?

Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot. They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?” “They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.” At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus. He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?” Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.” Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”). John 20:11-16 NIV

Mary stood at the tomb, distraught, and having absolutely no idea what to do. The man who had removed seven demons from her, and had given her a new life full of hope and true meaning had died, and now his body was gone from the tomb. How often are we like this woman, distraught, and not knowing what to do? My friend, Jesus is there for you. We must remember that Jesus is always there for the believer. No situation we face is too difficult for Him. He can and will help us. All we need to do is turn to Him.

None of the women or men who went to the tomb really understood what Jesus had told them about His death and resurrection. Do we at times also forget about what the Lord did and what it means for us as believers? We can turn back to Him, acknowledge Him as our resurrected Lord, the first fruit for all who believe in Him.

Both the angels and Jesus asked Mary why she was crying. Jesus is waiting, asking us why we cry, why we are so sad. He did tell us that we would face trials in this world, but that we should take heart, for He has overcome the world.

Jesus called to the woman “Mary”, and at that calling she recognized Him. What must Mary have felt at that very moment of recognition? All you who believe, trust in the promise that Jesus calls you each by name. You are loved so much by Him. He knew you before you were born. He died for you. He rose from death for you. And He waits for you to always turn to Him. Turn to Him and feel God indwell you!!

Just as Jesus asked Mary 2000 years ago, He asks each of us today “Who is it that you seek?”
