Nostalgia television networks frequently air ‘Young at Heart’ during the Christmas season. Viewers may identify with Doris Day’s character or with other members of her close-knit family. The script had scenes with celebration; yet, it also had times of deep sadness and depression.

I recall seeing the traditional tree, mistletoe, the snow and comforting flames in the fireplace on the TV screen. Script writers tucked truth inside a fictional story; we do not all find happiness at Christmas.

Scenario: Doris as Lori and Frank Sinatra as Barney were wed; they struggled to make ends meet on his meager income as songwriter. As a result, he felt like a failure. She learned that she was expecting their first child and decided to give him the wonderful news as her Christmas gift.

Before she had the opportunity, he gave sway to his chronic depression and attempted to take his own life.

God had created life in her womb; in the world, another had decided to end his. The movie is a tear jerker; fortunately, the writers, director and producer gave us a happy-ending. Her husband recovered from his self inflicted auto accident injuries. His career soared; a son was born.

God’s Son Jesus was born. The Son did not come to paradise; mankind had made a mess of things. We needed a Savior.

“And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins (Matthew 1:21 KJV).”

Jesus saves; he restores hope.
