But for His Mercy
Mercy is companion.
Before the days’ light
She seek for favour.
On her knees,
Plead great love’s concern
And tender the wrath’s terror.
Mercy is a companion of charity,
Accompanied always by kindness.
Who can discourage mercy’s hope?
She sets her altar before the almighty.
And make her dwelling
In the mind of the saviour.
She lubricates all operations
With compassion
and in all obtain scarce favours.
She tries the hotness of God’s anger
And pacifies the fierceness,
By the persecution of love.
The earth has called for destruction by deeds,
But mercy holds the world’s existence still
In her consistent pleas
