Daily bread

In Matthew 6 Jesus is teaching His disciples how to pray and, in verse 11 He says, “Give us this day our daily bread.”

I don’t think Jesus is talking here about food. I believe He is referring to Himself, the Word. What led me to believe this (actually I’ve always believed this but what convinced me) is when I read John 6 today. In verse 34, while Jesus is speaking to the crowd, they shout, “Sir,” they said, “Give us that bread every day.” The very same words used in the prayer that Jesus is teaching in Matthew: “Give us this day our daily bread.”

Jesus was teaching them that He is the “Bread of Life.”  And you remember that in John 1, Jesus is referred to as the Word. The Word of God is the bread of life and we need to feed on it daily. And we all know that the Word of God is the Bible. Do you read your Bible daily? Do you feed on the Bread of life daily?

Why should we, you ask? Because “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

Man of God: You’ve probably heard the phrase, “He’s a man of God” referring to the preacher but the Scriptures say that all believers are people of God.

Titus 2:11-12…”For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age…”  All people should live godly lives.

Acts 17:11 says …”They searched the Scriptures day after day”

It’s not just the preachers, folks, it’s all of us who believe. We all must feed on the Word, daily.

Dear God, Father of all creation, bless us O Lord with an unearthly desire to study from the bread of life on a daily basis, and to hide it in our hearts so that we might not sin against thee.

I ask in the name of the Lord, Jesus and to God be the glory.
