   In the 36th chapter of the book of the prophet Jeremiah, we read that Jeremiah’s prophecy about the coming destruction at the hands of the King of Babylon was utterly rejected by King Jehoiakim of Judah, who defiantly cut up the scroll upon which the prophecy was written and cast it into the fire. When Jeremiah learned of the king’s belligerent actions he called for another scroll and reiterated the prophecy,  adding that King Jehoiachim would have no one to sit on the throne of David, be punished for his iniquity and die a shameful death.  Jeremiah seemed undaunted by having to begin all over again recording the prophecy with Baruch his scribe.  In fact his prohecy from God merely grew in its scope,  for we read at the close of the chapter, “And besides, there was added to them many similar words.”

When our God-given work seems wasted, lost, attacked and rideculed, may we remember the fierce resilience of Jeremiah and Baruch who came back even stronger, fighting even harder in the might of their God who always has the last word.
