The Dread and the Dead of Winter

Our conversation turned to the dropping temperatures.  My older friend spoke of how he dreaded the coming winter.

“Don’t dread it,” I started to answer, but as I considered his words more carefully, I knew he had good reason to say what he did.  He surely knew how he had suffered in previous winters, how he and his wife both had felt their various physical pains more sharply in the cold.  He knew too how others close to him had not only suffered but also died during the long,  sometimes harsh winter seasons.  So it had often been a season of loss and had that dark aura about it.  But there was this hope , maybe it would be a mild winter this year after all.  Yes, that was worth praying for…a milder,  shorter winter this time around.
