God's Perfect Word

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.” (John 1:1-3 NIV).

I must fess up. In my infancy as a Christian I tended to shy away from the gospel of John. It was much harder for me to understand it compared to the synoptic gospels. As I began the maturation process as a Christian, the Holy Spirit began to open my mind, heart, and spirit to the richness contained within the gospel of John. Passages began to jump off the pages at me, piercing my spirit and soul.

Each of the four gospels presents Jesus from a different point of emphasis. The gospel of John is presented with the emphasis on Jesus as the Son of God. It speaks of the divinity of Christ. This is quite evident within the opening three verses of this gospel.

Why was Jesus referred to as the Word? For mankind to be reconciled to the Heavenly Father, God needed to make sure that mankind knew what was on God’s mind. What pleased God, and what was an abomination to Him. God had a perfect plan. He decided He would send His Son to dwell among us as a man. Christ was then able to teach mankind about the Heavenly Father, who He was, and what was pleasing to Him. What’s more, His Son, Jesus Christ, became an atonement for the sins of all man by offering His body as a perfect sacrifice to the Heavenly Father. So, God the Father sent His Son to let us know His word. Jesus Himself is the perfect word of God the Father. More than 10 times in the gospel according to John, Jesus lets us know that the Father and the Son are one. He tells us that He (the Son) can only do what He sees the Father doing. He also tells us that His food is to do the work of the One whom sent Him. Jesus intercedes for all believers at the right hand of God the Father. Jesus is man’s perfect God, God’s perfect man, and God’s perfect word.

John tells us that the word was with God in the beginning. Jesus was with God in the beginning. Genesis 1:26 reads: Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness” Unless the word us herein refers to God as “me, myself, and I”, then I do believe the word us refers to the Father and the Son. John would agree based on verse 3 above “Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.”
