No Escape Hatch

I heard the story of a woman whose early acceptance of an offer of marriage was motivated by the fact that she was mistreated by her family.  She saw marriage as an escape hatch from an unpleasant situation.  Of course, the marriage didn't last.  While it is understandable in a bleak and abusive situation, it was only a temporary solution that faded fast once the honeymoon was over.   In fact when that escapist mindset is at its foundation,  a marriage will often repeat the same kind of dysfunctions that existed in the family from which the person was fleeing.  The marriage wasn't built on the kind of love needed to make a marriage succeed over time.  Would we want to walk into a relationship with one who not running to us but from something or someone else?

Similarly when we cry out for the return of Jesus our heavenly bridegroom,  as the bride of Christ does in Revelations 22, verse 20, "The one who has spoken these things says, 'I am coming quickly.'  "Even so, come quickly Lord Jesus."  we must take care it is a cry of love and not merely a cry for relief or rescue from the surrounding darkness.  The one married for those reasons, even if its just relief from boredom, begins before long to feel used.  Only the Holy Spirit can create that heart cry out of the purity of love that becomes irresistible to Jesus the heavenly Groom.  "The Spirit and the bride say 'come'."  (Revelations 22, v.17) 

I am beginning to tell Him I love Him as I call for His return, making it a prayer as i say it, that I and we would love him more and more with the kind of love of which He our Groom is so worthy.
