Flinging Away the Darkness

Romans chapter 13 verse 12 from Apostle Paul's epistles says, "the night is far gone the day is almost here.  Let us then drop the works of darkness and put on the armor of light."  The NKJ version says let us "cast off" the works of darkness.  The Amplified Version seems to go even further in saying let us"fling away" the works of darkness.  Merely to drop them may mean they fall too conveniently at our feet where they can be readily picked up again, but to cast or fling them away is to energetically put them at a safe distance from us where we are not as likely to rediscover them and reentangle ourselves in them.  Flinging away the deeds of darkness means having the wisdom whenever and wherever possible to steer far clear of the scenes of our besetting sins.  (See also Hebrews chapter 12, v1)

When the works of darkness have been cast to such a safe distance, we are more free to follow the rest of the instructions: "put on the armor of light."   There is an increasing need to be heavily armed with our spiritual armor in this hour, because our adversary seems to be letting loose with all his artillery, his full arsenal.  Therefore we are to make full use of all the armor made available to us. (Ephesians 6)  After all, that's why it's there!  Let us not neglect it.
