There are many titles given to Jesus within the four gospels. One of the titles is the Son of Man.

The title Son of Man appears over 80 times within the four gospels. Although its interpretation is still debated today, it does speak to the humanity of Jesus. The title only appears in sayings of Jesus. Jesus did take on flesh and dwelt among us as a man. This was all part of the perfect plan of the Father!

I would like to share just a few passages within the gospel according to Matthew which use this title for Jesus.

In Matthew 9, beginning with verse 4 Jesus says “’Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your minds?’ Which is easier: to say ‘Your sins are forgiven’ or to say ‘Get up and walk’? ‘But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.’ So he said to the paralyzed man ‘Get up, take your mat and go home.’ Then the man got up and went home.” This is also in Mark 2:10 and Luke 5:23. Jesus did show the Pharisees that he had authority, yet they chose not to believe in him because of the works he did.

Starting at Matthew 12:39 Jesus says “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” Luke 11:30 also has this message with different wording. Those listening did not understand that Jesus was speaking about his death and resurrection. Jesus had performed many signs for all to see, yet many chose not to believe in him because their hearts were blind to the truth.

In chapter 16 of Matthew, in verses 27-28, Jesus says “For the Son of Man is going to come in His Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done. Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.” Jesus will come again, and when he does everyone will be judged according to their works here on earth. Job 34:11 tells us “He repays everyone for what they have done; he brings on them what their conduct deserves.” Ecclesiastes 3:17 reads “I said to myself, ‘God will bring into judgment both the righteous and the wicked, for there will be a time for every activity, a time to judge every deed.’"

In chapter 20 Jesus speaks of his death to his disciples. Starting at verse 18 “We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. On the third day he will be raised to life!” See also Mark 10:33. Please also see Luke 18:31. When Jesus speaks to his disciples about this matter, he speaks about both his death and his resurrection.

In verse 26 of Matthew 20 Jesus speaks about the one who is great “Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be the first must be your slave – just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” This is also found in Mark 10:45. To be great in God’s kingdom, we must act as our Lord did. He came to serve, and not to be served. We must serve others. We must think of the well-being of others. We do not need to focus on worrying about our earthly needs, as the Father will provide for us all that we need.

In speaking of his second coming, in chapter 24 at verse 27 Jesus says “For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.” This is also in Luke 17:24. Jesus had warned prior to this verse that many would come claiming to be him, but not to listen to them. He does not want believers to be fooled by events that will lead up to his second coming. Continuing, in verse 30 Jesus says “Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory.” Moving on to verse 37, Jesus says “As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark, and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.” This is also in Luke 17:26. And in verse 44 Jesus says “So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.” We must always be ready for our Lord’s second coming. It could happen any moment!

Jesus is the Son of Man!
