Where Does The Blame Lay

“Hide-Daddy’s Home” whispered the little girl
“Here-under the bed” said the little boy
Suddenly, all laughter ended
Fear replaced their joy

Oh no- Daddy is yelling
He’s hitting Mommy again
Why must we live like this?
Will it ever end?

Let’s crawl out the window
Go to our hiding place
Shh-lets go quietly
So Daddy will not give chase

Two little children
Try to run away
From violence
They see everyday

Is it Daddys fault?
Or could it be Mommys’ too?
For the sad and painful life
They must live through

Yes Daddy is the violent one
But Mommy chooses to stay
She is too frightened
To leave and take her children away

Or maybe it is society
And how we treat them with shame
Somehow I figure
We are all to blame

We turn a deaf ear
To their pitiful cry
And to their bruises
We have a blind eye

We reach out not a hand
To help them out of their pain
So when something happens
Our hands-their blood will stain

We don’t want to get involved
Is what we all say
So we give them no avenue for escape
So I ask-where does the blame lay?
