One sure way that we know as believers in Jesus Christ that we are not moving or operating or "walking" (as the Bible calls it) by the Spirit of God is when we are yielding to condemnation in our thought processes.(Romans 8, v.1) Often these thoughts take the form of inner accusations over forgiven incidents in our past lives and direct attacks on our self-worth.  Entertaining condemning thoughts or even accepting condemning words from others into our souls for serious consideration are like flashing red lights on the dashboards of our souls, to alert us to the fact that something is very wrong: in this case, the fact that we are beginning to think and live according to what the Bible calls "the flesh" and not the spirit.  The flesh can be defined as all that is in the fallen human nature apart from the Spirit of God.  As we would do with a car, we need to pull over and address the problem, getting our minds back on track in this case with thoughts that are consistent with Word of God or the truth of God, and the tender love of God for us.
