Winter's Warmth

The breeze still turns the weather vane,
And shakes the lofty pine
Down in the mountain valley;
At that old 'home-place' of mine.

The pine cones rattle through the boughs,
Then clatter to the ground;
To lie atop the pine straw
Which, beneath the tree, abounds.

A squirrel is playing 'leap-frog'
Through a stately hickory tree;
As he gathers, for the winter
Ev'ry hick'ry nut he sees.

A hint of Fall is in the air
And long sleeves grace our arms.
The sky is cloudless...deepest blue,
Yet...still...the sunshine warms.

A few more weeks....then frost will show;
The bears will hibernate.
The birds have gone....all headed South
Escaping Winter's date.

And HERE WE ARE....within our walls,
Awaiting months of chill.
But WE'LL be warmed by natural gas.....
IF we can pay the bill!

Howard this is one of your best poems, and that says a lot. Worth memorizing.

Howard,

I liked your poem a lot. It doesn't have to be in the category "humor" though. In fact, all but the last two lines was very straightforward. So, it could be country humor, or it could be on the lines of a Robert Frost. You choose. Thanks for reviewing my new poem, by the way. I've met a new writer! RC
