The axolotl, the Mexican salamander that keeps tadpole traits throughout its life, has been used as a symbol of the fear of growth and maturation. Maybe that is missing most of the point, though, of what this creature was designed to teach us. Might it rather be primarily a reminder to us to maintain or recultivate certain childlike qualities as we age? Chief among these qualities would be a childlike faith, a sense of wonder and a sense of humor, resilience, and a readiness to forgive.
And as my dear wife reminded me, of such attitudes as these is the kingdom of God composed!
