Leadership
Today, Myanmar is holding a nationwide election participated by the opposition and ethnic parties. The administration’s candidates are retired generals who run for civilian legislative position as part of the plan to remain in power. The main opposition party headed by Daw Aung San Su Kyi is poised to trump the administration candidates, although it was beset by charges of being elitist because of its decision to not include former student activist and candidates from the ethnic minorities. Despite the campaign being timid as attack against each other was not allowed by the Union Election Committee (UEC), the undercurrents can be felt. People are still confused who to vote for.
Governance and politics is in God’s agenda just like other things in life. Others may be disgusted in how politics work or how politicians act nowadays, but God is in control and His agenda will prevail. Leaders are appointed by God and we will be given godly leaders who will ensure our welfare. Corrupt and ungodly people are raised into positions of leadership because some voters are allowing their votes to be used. Some election officials also allow their position to be used in distorting the true voice of the people.
The best way to maintain good governance and clean politics is to place righteous leaders. The book of Proverbs is replete with provisions on qualities of good and righteous leaders. Proverbs 25 spelled out four qualities of good leaders. We have to look for these qualities and use it as guides in selecting leaders.
Seeking advice before deciding is a mark of a good leader. More so if the leader is seeking God’s leading in everything he does. Verse 2 of Proverbs 25 says, ‘It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings.’
Sagaciousness is the next quality that characterizes a good leader. He must have wisdom that covers a span of interests. A leader well verse with the intricacies of times will not be fooled. His knowledge must be beyond the understanding of the common people. Verse 3 further says, ‘As the heavens are high and the earth is deep, so the hearts of kings are unsearchable.’
Supervising the people around him is the third mark of a good leader. Delegation is an important management function. The leader cannot do everything, so he should have discernment in selecting responsible people who will work under him. Verse 5 states, ‘remove wicked officials from the king’s presence, and his throne will be established through righteousness.’
Finally, being sensitive and listening to the needs of the people will not only endear him but will make his actions appropriate. Listening and acting based on justice, truth and love will differentiate a good from a bad leader. Verse 15 states, ‘Through patience a ruler can be persuaded, and a gentle tongue can break a bone.’
