I was reviewing the profile of some organizations we are working with and I was surprised to found out they have no plans. In business and in the development community, everything depend on plans, be it an annual plan or the much longer and forward-looking strategic plan. It is used to make sure that activities are within the control of the top management and decision-makers. Staffs are gauged based on the implementation of the planned activities assigned to them and the results compared with the targets set in the plan. If everything goes well and according to the plan, that is effectiveness; if results are beyond the target, that is excellent work; and, if the results are below, that is inefficiency.

Early in my life, I developed the passion to take ‘control’ of my life and drafted my vision of what I would be five to ten years in the future. I even visualized my plan, as recommended by a speaker I heard in a sales seminar, by making a scrap book of the condition I desired. The scrap book was full of the things I crave - money, house, car, investments, etc. at the end of the year I checked on the status and the level of attainment of my plans. All my activities were centered on the plan and I feel bad when there were deviations and things don’t work out as envisioned. My prayer then was ‘God grant me these things and these opportunities..’.

In 2009, Typhoon Ketsana hit Manila and inundated areas not previously affected by floods, including the city where live. In a snap, everything was lost, together with my plan. I was disoriented and don’t know what to do. It seemed everything has fallen apart. Contemplating on the loss, Matthew 6:25 gave us the courage to go on as the Lord said, “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear.

We have to start from scratch after the flood. My financial situation at that time was not enough for us to recover and this time I waited and asked God for leading. It came as an invitation to work outside the country with substantial compensation. From then on I asked for leading and God has been gracious, showing the way.

Now I still have plans and targets. The difference is, this time I make sure that plans are aligned with what God has in store for me. If an activity is aligned with God’s will, it will happen smoothly without troubles, but if it is not according to His will, hindrances are placed for us to reconsider. I am taking cue from God, with prayers every step of the way, ‘God your will be done in my life…’.
