Managing our Character is a Virtue
Human character or moral fiber is one of the crucial components of management in life. Character is what defines who we are at any moment. It advertises us and our product. It either makes or destroys us if not managed very well while dealing with people in every endeavour. Therefore, it is pertinent for us to work on our character in order to maintain our success in life. Working on our character means to expunge all negative behaviour, and attitudes that repel people from us. But inculcate those values (like honesty, respect, love etc) that attract human relationship and harmony both at home and outside.
There are two extreme poles in every human being that contradicts each other; they are the quest for power/authority and humility. Power is the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behaviour and actions of others for a defined purpose. Power is a personal talent that we can develop through grace to achieve worthwhile goals for God and humanity. It does not depend upon our title, position, or authority. It's simply the ability to motivate others to take specific actions for a specific outcome to the glory of God. While humility is meekness in human heart, it shows no pretence of any sort and not believing that we are superior to others or better-off due to one advantage or the other. In other words it’s all about being content to allow others within and outside our circle to discover who we really are without imposing self on them to act in contrary. Humility is a personality or quality of a modernized or restructured child of God that magnets towards him/her all divine blessing, mercy, kindness, love etc. from men and God. Absolute humility demands on us to be obedient to the authority of the word of God and His love. Every man on earth wants to exercise power to the fullest. Power and authority need absolute strength, sovereignty, skillfulness and defensive strategy etc. While humility most often is dominated by our drive for power/authority in family, business, office, church and the society at large.
These two extremes cannot sustain our achievements if one is dominating the other or one is lacking in its totality. There should be a balance between them. We need to strike a balance so that we can comfortably and happily work with people because no man is an island. Striking a balance in this sense is a sign of maturity and wisdom based on the word God. The account of Our Lord Jesus in Revelation 5:5-6 says He is the Lion of the tribe of Judah and also the Lamb that was slain. These two qualities are always difficult to be found in one person. It is either you are a lion or a lamb; because the two do not go or live together. He (Jesus) is the victim and the victor says the scripture. In order to maintain or manage our success, we need to combine the two characters or attributes of a lion and a lamb in our lives. The true successful people in life have lion exterior (appearance), power /authority attributes in them to work their way to the highest level and the lamb heart, i.e. humility to relate and accept people as they are. We need boldness, strength, power, sound judgment, and articulation to work our way up the ladder but humility, simplicity, gentleness, meekness, love, and longsuffering to maintain what we have strived to achieve. Therefore, in doing this we need the divine ability and grace of God to put ourselves above board. Managing our success in this world is the most difficult job or task to engage in. Jesus is the Lamb of God and the lion of the tribe of Judah. He was bold to confront situations, has authority and power to do all things, either give or take life; at the same time, He was simple, accommodating, self-disciplined, loving and caring to all that were around Him and the world in general. To be a good manager, communicator or leader both at home and outside by the mercies of God should try to put these human traits to a balance because management is all about mutual relationship for a desired result.
