"The first one to plead his cause seems right,
Until his neighbor comes and examines him." Proverbs 18 v.17
Oftentimes in a legal case the first witness to testify or attorney to present his or her side of the case seems to have won the day by presenting what appear to be overwhelmingly convincing or irrefutable arguments, that is until a witness for the defense speaks or the defense attorney has his long awaited opportunity for rebuttal.
It occurs to me how much like this legal process it can be for each of us when the accuser of the brethren testifies or argues aggressively in our thought processes to so skillfully paint a picture,  or sketch and etch an impression of our utter worthlessness or of the extreme hopelessness of our situations and conditions.
Thank God he does not have the last word!! The Holy Spirit is the crucial witness who has yet to testify on our behalf. Jesus Christ the Righteous is our advocate and defense attorney whose anointed words and thoughts can totally change the complexion of the case and transform our perception of ourselves, Himself and our circumstances, as we let those dynamic words and thoughts enter ever more deeply into our awareness.
We have only to look to Paul's epistle to the Romans toward the close of chapter 8 to get an idea of the kinds of things our Advocate is saying to defend and vindicate us.
"What then shall we say to these things (the accusations and condemnation) If God is for (insert your own name) who can be against us? He who did not spare His own son, but delivered Him up....How shall He not with Him also freely give....all things? Who shall bring a charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies.
Who is he who condemns (insert your name)? It is I the Christ who died and furthermore I am also risen, I am even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for (insert your name). Who shall separate (insert your name) from my love, the love of Christ? (our legal and spiritual adversary has no answers to these penetrating questions) ....,For I am persuaded that neither death nor life nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing shall be able to separate (insert your name) from the love of God which is in me, Jesus Christ (y)our  Lord." (based on Romans 8 vs 31-39,my parentheses and adaptation from NKJ)
