There are many Bible verses that speak about receiving Jesus or coming to Jesus. Check out the following verses: John 1:11-12; Romans 10:13;

The only way we can come to Jesus is by, figuratively speaking, walking on the water. Peter could not have come to Jesus in his own strength or ability because no man can defy the laws of gravity without serious consequences unless a greater power than the gravitational pull overcomes it.

How was Peter able to walk on the water? Isn't that something that only Jesus could do? In this particular case the Lord gave Peter the power to do what Peter could never do of himself and so it is in our own salvation.

The reason Peter could come to Jesus from an apparently insurmountable situation was the same reason given in John 6:44 "No man can come to me except the Father which hath sent me draw him."

Peter was being drawn to Jesus for he had first the desire to be with Jesus, to be near His person which is a good thing. Peter was miraculously empowered to do the seemingly impossible, namely, to walk on the sea to Jesus. Now this very act took faith and we know that faith is a gift that nobody has of themselves. The Bible says in Romans 10: "Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God." Did Peter hear the word of God? Absolutely he did and so he ventured out into the sea. He stepped out by faith and this faith was God's gift to him because not all men have faith. (2 Thess. 3:2) However, all men are subject to doubt, fear and the evil sin of unbelief.

If we keep our eyes on Jesus and obey Him not doubting anything He says and not looking for excuses as to why we might fail we have the peace of God and the God of peace for our security and salvation. We read in Isaiah 26:3: "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee."

What happened when Peter let the circumstances of the stormy sea overpower his senses? He began to sink just like you or I might do if we began to take our eyes off Jesus.

The gospel is the means whereby we may and must come to Jesus if we are to be saved from our sins. The great apostle declared "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ; for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone who believes; to the Jew first and also to the Greek (Gentile)
