I remember getting my first red light camera ticket way back around 1999 when I lived in Hollywood. I was doing a job with a friend named Paul Walter.

Paul and I had finished loading up my van full of concrete and I had entered an intersection on my way to the landfill. There was a traffic light change but during the light change there was no way to safely stop with the heavy weight on my van so I proceeded cautiously through the intersection only to see a flash of light.

Within about a week I received a ticket in the mail for around $250. After answering the matter in person and protesting it I never heard back from the city again regarding this matter. It's a good thing because I had no intention of paying out my hard earned money to the bureaucrats on what seemed to me an unconstitutional law that was Orwellian in nature.

I knew if you wanted your freedom you had to fight these kind of ridiculous intrusions into your liberty or risk losing more of your freedom.

Back then I didn't have a computer but I did have web TV. So I did some research and found a company who made a spray on chemical you coats on your license plate that reflected the light back into the camera so as to make your vehicle ID impossible.

Great idea I thought even though I never purchased the product. I did share this with my friend Paul who agreed with me that you have to fight back against the Beast of political tyranny.

This was when these red light cameras were first being tested and the city was probably wondering how the public would react to them. They didn't set well with me. Where was the cop to witness my breaking of the law? Were there no allowances or exceptions to the rule?

In my case they let it go but probably not so much now days.

If you live in or drive in Beverly Hills, this city has just amped up its red light camera enforcement program again. At the same time, many other cities are considering doing the same thing.

Previously, many cities throughout California have elected to ditch using cameras to catch red light runners, but not Beverly Hills. Just this month, several new cameras were added to various intersections.

As the Beverly Hills Police Department has announced: if you get a ticket during the first 30-day period, it will be a warning, not an actual ticket.

At the same time, facial recognition technology is being used in conjunction with red light traffic cams.

Red light camera violation notices typically first get mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle caught on camera whether they were the ones driving or not. But sometimes the registered owner is bypassed and the ticket goes straight to the driver.

How is this possible?

The use of facial recognition software in conjunction with traffic cams and DMV databases by government agencies is becoming more and more common. They can mail you a ticket by matching your face to an address in the DMV database.

If you’re not feeling these ‘big brother’ facial recognition systems, then you’re in luck. “Privacy glasses” are in the works.

“Through a mixture of technology and specialist materials, privacy wearables such as invisibility glasses can make it difficult for cameras or other facial recognition technologies to get a clear view of your identity,” says AVG Innovation Labs.
