Speak Thoughtfully And In Due Time
© 2015
by
Stephen A. Peterson
To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven…a time to keep silent, and a time to speak.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-7 (NIV)
It has been said that discretion is of better valor—in many instances. The foolish often speak and act inappropriately and at inappropriate times. No matter how good or formal a word or deed may be, there are instances when it is inappropriate. Wild animals such as wolves known for their hunting skills and abilities are, nonetheless, prudent hunters. An individual wolf will size up their prey. If its prey is too large, though hungry, the wolf will not attack. The individual wolf will attack if it assesses its larger prey as extremely weak or near death.
Although some people possess a great deal of intelligence, at times fail again and again, if the use of speech is inappropriately timed. After all, judgment is necessary to fly a kite, mow a lawn, sail a boat—some days are not the time to do what it is one likes to do or has to do. To know when to act is an education unto itself and may be summed up in a single word—discretion.
Prayer:
Loving Father, grant me the knowledge and ability to speak to my brothers and sisters, Your children, in a gentle and loving manner. Guard my words and actions so that I refresh the hearts and souls of others. Make it so that at times let silence be my guide rather than words may do more harm than good. Make my mind and heart be ever fixed and rooted in Your most Holy Word. These things I pray. Amen.
