Defining Moment For Marriage

I thought I would begin this article with the definition of marriage from Webster’s Dictionary and was surprised to see that the definition has already been amended. The definition of marriage is, according to Webster’s

(1): the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law (2) : the state of being united to a person of the same sex in a relationship like that of a traditional marriage

It used to be that the words “gay” and “marriage” meant something totally different than they do today. It is also clear that the lines of debate are fierce over the issue of gay marriage. Regardless of any laws or court rulings, the truth is that marriage is still between a man and a woman. The Bible is still clear on this subject and still says that homosexuality is a sin. I often read the commentaries in my local newspaper and the banter back and forth between those who support gay marriage and those who don’t. I have to admit that sometimes I am even embarrassed by other Christians who level just as much hate toward the gay supporters as they do in our direction. To put it mildly, it isn’t a pretty sight. I would have to say that I am often tempted to write commentaries of my own to the local newspaper. Especially when the editors side with the gay agenda yet there is never any balanced reporting from someone who is against it. Forget freedom of speech.
So the question in this warfare seems to be: “why can’t we all get along?” The answer is simple – we can’t. We never will. Darkness and Light can’t get along. It isn’t possible. The only way it can is if light compromises with the darkness. The compromising is happening and this will be a battle to the end of time. It saddens me because I know it won’t get any better for the Christian. Although there is a big push to pass the Federal Marriage Amendment, I doubt it will last. The minority opinion of the gay supporters will eventually win over the will of the people. I’m not trying to be negative here or show a lack of faith in those petitioning for the Federal Marriage Amendment, but it is my opinion that we are fighting a losing battle with gay marriage becoming legalized. Does that mean we shouldn’t fight it? No. We should do all we can to support the true definition of marriage. Christians should get involved and speak out. We have been quiet for too long.

Does God really care what sex we marry as long as we are in a committed and loving relationship? Yes, God does care about that and any combination other than one man and one woman is wrong. To answer this question any other way is to eliminate God from our marital relations. We must uphold our integrity on sexual purity if we want our lives to be an example of Christian discipleship. We must not allow ourselves to be swayed by every wind of doctrine. This is happening and it will continue to go on until Jesus returns.

It isn’t about debates or spouting off some religious clichés, it is about holiness and purity. Without the holiness of God and the purity of Jesus Christ, none of us will make it. Our own theology or views on society changes won’t affect God’s Word on these things. God is a god of love but He is also a God of judgment. Choose today which side you will be on and be sure that you are basing this choice on eternity, not public opinion. God will have the last word.
