Mahalo!
You may have never heard of a place called Lava Lava Island. No, it isn’t a well-kept vacation resort in the Hawaiian Islands; instead it was the theme for our Vacation Bible School this summer. A place where Jesus’ love flows!
For the first time in several years, I was able to participate in Vacation Bible School at my local church. I will tell you here in the beginning that children’s ministry is not my thing. Don’t get wrong – I think children’s ministry is very important; I’m just not comfortable in that area of ministry.
I really didn’t have a difficult job during Vacation Bible School like the teachers and directors but one that was suited to my talents and abilities. During the week I went around taking pictures and making a video of the weeks’ activities. On the final night I showed the highlights of the week in a PowerPoint Presentation. Since I am in a technical career field, it was familiar territory for me. I also helped out where I was needed. I had originally thought I would volunteer to help with the games; however, the timing just didn’t work out for that. Now, I’m glad because those games seemed a little complicated for me to try to explain.
During the first night of VBS, one of the directors asked if I would like to “help” with the puppet show. I volunteered and “helped” Surfer Bob during the closing Luau each night. I would help Surfer Bob talk about the lessons each night and announce winners of the contests. The week of working in VBS wasn’t all that bad. I might even do it again next year
I had the opportunity to observe several of the activities during the week. I couldn’t help but notice that we had a good group of people working together as a team. It was very encouraging to see everyone getting along and supporting each other. Our VBS directors worked the hardest during the week to keep everything going but they had assembled a good crew to work to help them out.
Now that our VBS is several weeks behind us, it is unfortunate that this camaraderie hasn’t translated into a more permanent situation in our local church work. It is sad that we may not see some of the children or workers until we have VBS next year. This is the part that puzzles me somewhat. For one week we are all able to rearrange our schedules to work in VBS for five consecutive nights but can’t seem to find the way to a church pew on Sunday mornings? I don’t understand that and I’m sure it baffles my pastor as well. It isn’t that we want these people to come every Sunday so that they can be “put to work” but we all need time to hear from God and learn from His Word. It’s not about the work -- it’s about Him. If we neglect to receive instruction from God in our own lives, how will that help us in other areas of ministry?
We shouldn’t base our value to God on the fact that we can come together to “work” in a ministry event. Won’t our ministry areas be much more enhanced when we – ourselves – are empowered by God’s Word? Yes, Children’s Ministry and all other ministries are important but we need to ensure we have a firm foundation on which to base that ministry.
