Ruth, the daughter-in-law speaks to Naomi, the mother-in-law, after the death of her husband, Mahlon.

Naomi is weary from grief, because she has lost in this foreign land her husband, Elimelech, and her two beloved sons, Mahlon and Chilion.

Naomi decides at this time to return to their former home in Jerusalem. She has nothing left.

When Naomi bids Ruth to return unto her own family in this country of Moab, Ruth responds in a loving manner, boldly, and confidently:

"Intreat me not to leave thee,

or to return from following after thee:

for whither thou goest,

I will go;

and where thou lodgest,

I will lodge:

thy people shall be my people,

and thy God my God:


Where thou diest,

will I die,

and there will I be buried:

the Lord do so to me,

and more also,

if ought but death part thee and me."
