What made Jesus so different? Was it his kindness? I don’t mean he was nice – being nice is about wanting other people to like you, about not making waves. Jesus had the courage to be kind – that is, the courage to compassionately challenge people with the truth.

We like nice people – they’re easy to be around. When I go to a restaurant I want the person waiting on me to be nice - I won’t care if they’re kind, or not. Being nice is great for business transactions and casual encounters. But it doesn’t move people.

I want to have an impact on people – to bring Jesus to them. But do I settle for being nice when Jesus has given me the courage to be kind? Is Christ calling me to care more about people’s well-being than their opinion of me? Perhaps the depth of my kindness is a measure of the depth of my love for God.

What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such a faith save him? - James 2:14
