What is your will for my life, God? What do you want me to do? What is it? Why won’t you tell me?

Sometimes it feels like I’m talking to a brick wall – God never seems to answer me when I ask him what I should do. But when Jesus walked this earth his decisions, actions and words did not come from a play book, they flowed out of his relationship with his heavenly Father. And the Pharisees hated Jesus because he focused more on loving people than on following the rules. Maybe I’m kind of like a Pharisee – obsessed with wanting to know the right thing to do.

A popular Christian life coach, Tony Stoltzfus, in his book The Invitation, says “following Jesus is not about doing the right things: it’s about doing things together.” I can let go of needing to know what to do, and focus instead on my relationship with God. Imagine! The God of the universe wants to spend time with us, one on one, so he can love on us and be good to us. As this love permeates our being we are filled with joy, and that joy propels our lives forward. Listen! Can you hear God singing his love song over you?

Surely goodness and love shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. – Psalm 23:6
