Have you ever wondered why do they have eggs as the symbol for Easter or why eggs have been chosen for the Easter entertainment? It has been a traditional practice to eat chocolate Easter eggs and bunnies, and sometimes lambs, to celebrate the festive dinner of Easter. Santa Claus is the entertaining symbol of Christmas season for the children to celebrate the birth of Jesus. So also Easter eggs are the entertaining symbol for Easter – the festival that commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Popularity of Easter eggs

Easter eggs have become the popular symbol of Easter in various form of color and taste. They can be sweet as chocolate which is commonly used everywhere or it can be boiled and colored eggs which look a more ancient practice.

The link between an egg and Easter

The association between the egg and the festival of Easter is an interesting factor. How are these eggs associated with Easter? The egg stands as a symbol of the sealed tomb in which Jesus was buried after his death. It was from this sealed tomb that Christ emerged, declaring his Victory over death and its darkness.

Egg the symbol of new life

A chick comes out of the egg that looked sealed and closed. No wonder that right from the ancient times the egg was also seen as a symbol of new life. It had been a tradition among the ancient Christians, which is followed even today in some denomination, to avoid eating egg during the fasting season of Lent and made people to look forward eating it when the Lent is over. There had also been a tradition of blessing the eggs and keeping them with colors.

There is also a tradition of giving decorated eggs as gifts. Even today there is a custom of blessing of Easter egg baskets and other symbolic foods in the Easter Vigil.

Easter is the festival of life. It is the festival of finding light in the darkness. It commemorates the Resurrection of Jesus Christ who rose on the third day. Happy Easter to all!
