THE SPEAR USED TO PIERCE OUR SAVIOR
_____________
Although Jesus had already died on the cross, one of the Roman soldiers was not convinced. He wanted more proof. So he picked up a spear and thrust it deeply into the side of our Savior, and immediately blood and water came rushing out. What more proof do you need?
Not only was evidence given that our Savior had died, evidence was also given of Christ's deity, that he was a real man, with a real human body, with real human blood, who died on the cross that afternoon, outside the walls of Jerusalem.
Saints, they didn’t know what they were doing. They thought they were doing mankind justice by getting rid of a blasphemer, but Jesus had mercy on his killers. He said, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34).
It is something to be able to have mercy on someone who has done you wrong. Jesus was an example of his own teachings. If you have been wronged by someone, you must forgive them. Do it now, for we do not know when we will take our final breath. And while you yet contemplate on whether or not you will forgive, think on this - "For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: but if you forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses" (Matthew 6:14).
History tells us that the spear used to pierce our savior in His side, was a long, sharp, pointed instrument used either as a weapon in war, or if it had barbs, it was used for stabbing fish. The point of the spear reached one of the ventricles of the heart, and the blood, yet warm, rushed out, either mingled with or followed by water, appearing to the beloved John what looked like blood and water flowing together - "This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ, not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that bears witness, because the Spirit is truth" (I John 5:6).
The heart is surrounded by a membrane called “pericardium” meaning the outer sack of the heart. This membrane contains a serious matter of liquor resembling water, which prevents the surface of the heart from becoming dry. It was this that was pierced, and from which the water flowed.
THE FOUNTAIN THAT FLOWED FROM THE OPEN WOUND
_____________
The wound in our Savior’s side must have been large, for we find that in John 20:27, Jesus said to Thomas…”put your hand in my side.” Some writers say that the size of Thomas hand must have been anywhere from 4 -5 inches in depth.
It is on this fact, that no human body could have survived such a wound. The open wound in our Savior's side became an open fountain for the remission of sins. It became the pool of Bethesda where you can step in and be completely healed of all your infirmities, no matter how long you have been in that condition. It became free medicine for the diseased.
The soldier who pierced the side of our Savior was one of the first to experience the power of the blood of Jesus. He had a disease in one of his eyes, but when a drop of the blood of Jesus fell into his diseased eye, he was healed from that moment, and it was then that he believed.
What can wash away my sins?... “NOTHING BUT THE BLOOD OF JESUS”....only the sacrificial pure and potent blood of the lamb of God. All it takes is one drop and you are delivered, healed and whole. Do you believe in the healing and delivering power of the blood of the lamb? Then taste and see for yourself what the Lord has done for many, and can do for you.
